Homeland Security Application Monitors Crowds’ Faces, Races, and Eye Movements to Detect Would-Be Criminals
The Department of Homeland Security is developing a system designed to apprehend people before they commit any crime with the FAST, Future Attribute Screening Technology. This is designed to analyze factors of ethnicity, gender, age, and profession; also whether a person is likely to commit a crime using a long list of factors. These factors of lie detection are breathing and heart rate, measures of body movements, voice pitch changes, blink rate, breathing patterns, eye movements, body heat changes and prosody (changes in speech rhythm and intonation). The “prototype screening facility” detects cues indicative of mal-intent using these factors.
I feel like the Sean Kane had a lot of beneficial facts on this technology. I feel like the FAST would be great for airport security, but has great other potential uses as well. I also feel that this could lead to misleading information someday down the road because people today and stressed, nervous and agitated on daily bases not due to mal-intentions, but because today life is stressful. And finally, I feel like if DHS plans to detain people for pre-conceived intentions or Pre Crimes that it would be against the law. There is no law stating you cannot think to commit a crime; there is morally, but religion and state are separate.
